The film is about one of the most violent and unpredictable weather phenomena found in arctic regions, the polar low.

We follow a group of scientists to Andøya where they will take part in the biggest storm hunt in Norwegian history. They want to make a scientific survey of polar lows, something that has never been done before.

A specially built German research plane, equipped with state of the art instruments, will be at their disposal. The plane is the most effective weapon the scientists have for capturing polar lows. Will they succeed; can the results help to prevent an environmental catastrophe and future loss of lives? With just three weeks at their disposal, the scientists on Andøya will be racing against the clock and the forces of nature.

We also meet fisherman Harald Figenschou, one of the few who has survived a shipwreck during a polar depression. He was fishing with his brother off the coast of northern Troms in late October 2001, when they were surprised by a type of weather that they had never encountered before.

The film was first shown on 20.12.2008 by NRK 1 and has so far been seen by 723000 viewers.

“Chasing the Polar Low” has been mentioned in the media, by among others, Aftenposten, Adresseavisen, Bergens Tidende, Nordlys, Fiskeribladet Fiskaren and in various NRK programmes.
