Some of the world’s most productive ecosystems are to be found under water. The enormous natural resources found in lakes, rivers and ocean give life to millions of people; provide many with work and some with riches. There is hardly a person on the planet that hasn’t tasted these blue riches.

NRK and Univisjon have collaborated on Riches from the Deep and the programme was produced by some of the same team that made the award winning documentary series A Journey in the History of Water. In Riches from the Deep, we wanted to focus on how access to fish and seafood has influenced civilizations and the lives and doings of mankind. Both cultural and environmental connections are emphasised.

Filming took place all over the world. We have fished in the traditional way in the Cook Islands, and fished for anchovies in Peru. We met fisher-women in Ghana, visited Lake Victoria in Kenya, the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, and the Sea of Gethsemane in Israel. We also take the viewers to China, Italy, Kazakhstan, Japan, USA, and of course Norway.

Riches from the Deep was co-produced with NRK Hordaland and was shown on NRK1 in December 2000. The series was also an international success and has been sold to more than ten countries.

Programme length: 3x52 min.
